SCHOOL TUITION FOR CHILDREN IN TANZANIA: MAY 2009

Moderator: Julie Fudge, St. Johns, Capitola

Description of the project: Provision of scholarships for school-age children in Triad Partnership Diocese of Western Tanganyika.

Launch Committee: Channing Smith St. Andrews priest, Ernie Boyer St. Thomas, Jackie Boynton, Marian Edwards Pacific Grove, Leslie Hayes, Kelly Hanse, Charles Greenleaf, Kim Fox and Julie Fudge, St. John’s Capitola, Mattie Scott All Saints Palo Alto, Amy Denney-Zuniga, St. Luke’s, Hollister.

Summary of Discussion:

  • Youth Group/Sunday School/School Involvement
  • Parish Involvement
  • Individual Sponsorship
    • Childreach is an organization that gives you regular reports on particular kid being supported.
    • Jerry Drino is moving in this direction with Hope With Sudan.
    • 3 people from St. Luke’s, Hollister.
      • Amy: how about sponsoring children in a region or a parish? Amy ran an Anglican school in a developing country & just logistically it is hard to get pictures of each kid etc. The organizations that send pictures, like the Save the Children Foundation, have a lot more staff. Maybe report once a year from the parish being sponsored “we have 12 kids, in grades x y & z, here is a group picture” etc.
      • Amy: the need for scholarships is inexhaustible. (she ran a school in El Salvador)
      • Diocese of El Salvador has scholarship program for every age level. Maybe W Tanganyika is interested in setting up such a program.
    • Charles: we don’t really know what the setup is over there (Western Tanganyika) but we can find out more.
    • Ernie: Mary said Girard had a list of names of kids needing tuition.
    • These are all kids affected by AIDs in one way or another.
  • Channing: once we make a commitment to these kids we need to see them through their education.
  • Parishes represented include St. John’s Capitola, St. Luke’s Hollister, Epiphany Marina, All Saints Palo Alto, St. Thomas Sunnyvale, St. Andrew’s Saratoga, St. Francis San Jose
  • Amy: we have 3 deaneries here & W Tanganyika has 3 regions; possible configuration of relationship.

Next Steps:

  • look into funding kids on Bishop Girard’s list
    • Start with Girard’s list, then explore other setups like parish-to-parish.
  • look at longer term projects on parish or regional basis
  • Explore possibility of having people from Tanzania who come in September available to visit parishes or be otherwise available for meeting with interested folks
  • Difference between the kids in uniform and the kids outside.
    • Want to know more about the difference between middle class & the rest of the kids: expectations, etc.
    • Would like to know more about it.
  • Direct at least half the $ to girls’ scholarships.
  • Gather information from Mary about Girard’s specific plans & ideas to carry out the education project.
  • What might Diocesan organization look like, esp. in relation to both Anglican & public schools
    • Individual to individual
    • Parish to parish
    • School to school
    • Parish to individual
  • How long commitment? Multi-year?
    • Not clear on cost of Anglican education
    • What about shortage of public secondary schools?
  • Request Resource person from Bishop Girard to meet with our group
    • Daniel from W Tanganyika will be in touch thru Mary with Julie
