Maly Hughes (St. Timothy’s) Standing CommitteeFunction: Shares in the authority of the Diocese with the Bishop and the Convention. Serves as the Ecclesiastical Authority when there is no Bishop; serves as the Bishop’s Council of Advice; approves applications for ordination and for encumbrance or alienation of church property; investigates charges against clergy and advises the Bishop in questions of clergy discipline. Diocesan Board of TrusteesNewly formed in October 2007. Combined the functions of what used to be the Diocesan Council and the Corporation. Finance CommitteeFunction: To oversee, monitor, and review the financial affairs of the diocese and all congregations, institutions, and organizations as explained in Canon 12.
Commission on MinistryFunction: Assists the Bishop in determining needs for ordained ministry in the Diocese; in recruiting, selecting, guiding, and examining persons for Holy Orders; in providing pastoral care for those on the Bishop’s staff; and in the development, training, utilization, and affirmation of the ministry of the Laity in the world. Ecclesiastical Trial CourtFunction: Conducts ecclesiastical trials of Priests or Deacons upon Presentment by the Standing Committee for offenses alleged under canon law. The Stewardship CommissionFunction: Continues the implementation of an ongoing Diocesan Stewardship Program, with special concern to teach stewardship as a living commitment to the mission of Christ; to establish a program for training and assistance, and a database of effective stewardship programs; to implement tithing and proportionate (50/50) giving; and to provide lay stewardship education. Department of MissionsFunction: Exercises oversight of mission congregations of the Diocese; supports local evangelism; encourages the adoption of intercultural ministry in all congregations; advocates in matters of social justice; and develops long range plans for organizing new congregations. Department of Higher EducationFunction: Exercises oversight of campus ministries in the Diocese; supports local congregations in their ministries to institutions of higher education; assists in developing new campus ministry programs. The Diocesan Review CommitteeFunction: Does an initial investigation (of a claim of misconduct against a clergy person in the diocese) to determine if further action is warranted. Diocesan Nominating CommitteeFunction: Presents lay and ordained nominations to the Convention for all elective offices, after consultation with the Deaneries. Meets as needed; consults by email/phone. Congregational Development CommitteeFunction: Facilitates parishes and missions in developing excellence in ministry with the context of a healthy organization and with due attention to its environment, by connecting best practices within our diocese or from outside sources. Peace & Justice CommissionFunction: Develops resolutions to send to National Church to raise awareness of justice needs throughout the world. Reports to National Peace and Justice Commission. Restorative Justice CommissionFunction: Supports the Diocese in fulfilling the mission of the church (“to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ . . . through the promotion of justice.”) by raising awareness of issues of criminal justice, by assisting congregations in understanding the concept of Restorative Justice and by equipping the saints for compassionate ministry as they develop programs and ministries to meet the needs of victims, offenders, families, communities and those who work in the criminal justice system. Deputies to General ConventionFunction: Represent the Diocese at the national General Convention Conference Education Planning Team (CERT)Function: Plans all the conferences and education opportunities within the diocese.
