Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift; that's why it's called the present.

Please review the following Campus Ministry Update in preparation for the Announcement time at the Deanery Meeting:
| I would like to take this opportunity to bring up to date about your campus ministry program at SJSU.
Ash Wednesday (See attached front page newspaper article)
Our Ash Wednesday services on campus drew almost 1000 students, staff and faculty compared to about 600 last year. This is a time a clergy are able to offer individual blessing prayers for each student and impose ashes. At times during the day six clergy (from many religious backgrounds) were unable to keep up with the line of students that stretched the entire length of the chapel.
The Listening Post:
Our Listening Post program that provides a drop in environment three days each week for students to talk out various issues in their lives has taken on new life with the training of two student volunteers that join our coordinator and two other adults. SJSU counseling services which whom we work closely provides several hours of training for our volunteers on cultural diversity and especially in what is known as the "cultural double bind" for first generational students of immigrants. Our Listening Post program is drawing national attention and we are being considered for a $5,000 grant.
The Student Chaplain and Student Group:
Kelsey "Mac" has been successfully working this year in growing our student group. Although we are small we have a good time together learning about each other and our religious traditions (we have members who are Hindu & Moslem) doing service )AIDS walk and now preparing to raising money to buy sewing machines for our companion diocese. We had a great winter retreat and are looking forward to spending some time together during spring break.
Walking Meditation & the Labyrinth:
Nine classes and about 300 students have just completed their labyrinth experience. This joins the 13 classes and about 500 students who walked in September. We are also in the process of helping to build a labyrinth on campus and facilitating other labyrinth experiences.
SJSPIRIT is the LAST Denominationally based Campus Ministry Left at SJSU
The Roman Catholic Church has closed their campus ministry program with no plans on re-opening it. Their campus building are being diverted to other uses. This means that we are the last "mainline", "liberal" or "progressive" voice left on a campus of over 30,000 students. If nothing else it speaks to the dedication of the Episcopal Church to be present and the success of our programing.
The United Church in Christ has just joined us financially with grant of $500. They join Grace American Baptist Church, St. Paul's United Methodist , and San Jose Metropolitan Community Church in supporting our ministry.
Our 2009 Budget
Because of various reasons our project income for 2009 is $20,000 less than last year if congregation and individuals continue to contribute at 2008 levels. This means that we have only a $21K to work with this year including the $10K from the diocese. Cash flow is poor and we have not be able to meet all of our payroll obligations this year. Any help from you congregation would be greatly appreciated.
- Hold a bake sale or fund raiser for campus ministry.
- Take up a collection and ask SJSU Alumni or other college graduates to kick in a small contribution.
- Keep us on your parish prayer lists.
- Ask Chaplain Roger Wharton to speak or do a special program at your congregation.
- Other creative ideas???
