[1:49] <cypromis> 190 ?
[1:49] <cypromis> not bad
[1:52] <trochej> 193 already
[2:36] <lblume> Are we going to reach the number needed? What was the number of cast votes last time?
[2:43] <trochej> in 2007 - 153 of 268
[2:44] <trochej> in 2008 - 234 of 368
[2:45] <trochej> in 2009 - 268 of 466
[2:46] <lblume> So 2009 was a bad year.....
[2:47] <trochej> Yup
[3:15] <cypromis> depends
[3:15] <cypromis> for what :D
[3:17] <trochej> Weather
[3:17] <trochej> :)
[3:18] <dcragun> 57% voted in 2007, 63% voted in 2008, 57% voted in 2009; none of these are good when voting is a requirement for core contributors
[3:18] <lblume> How is it a requirement? Does the status depend on it?
[3:19] <trochej> lblume: being CC gives you voting rights
[3:19] <lblume> Yes, but it's a right, not an obligation.
[3:27] <cypromis> still better than most democratic elections in the last xecade
[3:27] <cypromis> depends lblume
[3:27] <cypromis> in the new constitution cc and electorate are ssperated
[3:27] <cypromis> and I think thats the far better solution
[3:27] <cypromis> if you want to have commit rights and other stuff
[3:27] <lblume> Yes, though losing the voting rights after 2 years or 2 missed elections is not much different
[3:27] <cypromis> but do not want to be a voting member
[3:28] <cypromis> you can opt out
[3:28] <cypromis> or opt in if you want to be electorate
[3:28] <cypromis> so that quorum and stuff like that do not depend on people actually not interestedin that at all
[3:28] <cypromis> it is much different since it requires a decision
[3:29] <cypromis> what you suggest sounds like apunishment scheme for ignorance
[3:29] <cypromis> I prefer the one that requires you to move your arse to have voting rights
[3:29] <lblume> What do you mean, I suggest? That's the new constitution.
[3:35] <dcragun> If you look at the CC agreement ( http://204.152.191.100/wiki/index.php/OGB_2009/007 ), voting looks like a requirement to me...
[3:39] <lblume> I don't remember that, weird, was there really a follow up? Anyway, as no consequence for not voting was defined, how could it be applied? The letter of the current constituion is lacking in that aspect.
[3:42] <trochej> lblume I guess it was rather in the spirit of assuming that we are all grown ups and if we agree to carry out obligation to vtoe once a year - we would.
[3:43] <trochej> Which proved to be a false assumption.
[3:43] <dcragun> When I recently renewed my CC status, I had to respond to Valerie that I read and agreed before my CC status was renewed. I'm sure a lot of CCs said they agreed without reading it, but the requirement is there. You're correct in noting that no consequence is stated for failure to perform your duties. This is one reason why passing the new constitution is so important.
[3:44] <lblume> trochej: Rather too optimistic, yes. I'm not blaming anybody. People have real lives to attend to as well
[3:44] <lblume> dcragun: Ok, I get it, my CC status was renewed before that, so I didn't have to confirm.
[3:48] <dcragun> Good night all (or morning as the case may be)... See you later...
[3:48] * dcragun (~dcragun@76-191-129-144.dsl.dynamic.sonic.net) Quit (Quit: This computer has gone to sleep)
[4:03] <trochej> lblume I'm not blaming exactly. I rather notice some lack of enthusiasm for governance activities. :)
[4:13] <lblume> It's unsurprising, people are not signing up to do politics. I find it rather good that 60% voted considering it's a technical group.
[4:14] <trochej> lblume Yup, they could, however, help chenge it by voting for separatin of roles
[4:16] <lblume> Chicken and egg problem :-)

[8:50] * lblume (~lblume@raven.elanor.org) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[9:00] <plocher> lblume: The current constitution defines "majority" and "quorum" based on the number of Core Contribs, not the number of people who voted. It presumes that ALL CCs want to be active in the politics of the larger community. What we have found is that most CCs just want to deal with code or community outreach or documentation or ... and *NOT* politics (duh!). This apathy means that it is effectively impossible to g
[9:00] <plocher> anything passed that requires community approval. Last year, the proposed constitution FAILED to pass, even though it had 218 Ayes and only 31 Nays. It failed due to lack of affirmative majority because not all the CCs bothered to vote.
[9:02] <plocher> ogbot quorum
[9:02] Registered members: 153, Quorum: 143, Votes needed to pass constitution: 215
[9:03] <alanc> at least I haven't seen benr campaigning against the new constitution this year, just against OpenSolaris
[9:03] <plocher> So, even if every one of the 197 people who voted so far voted Aye for the constitution, it still would not reflect a majority of CCs, and would not pass...
[9:03] <alanc> (OpenSolaris the distro, not the project)
[9:07] <plocher> Benr (and many others) were perfectly happy with SXCE...

[10:21] <bubbva> who is going to be vote number 200 ?!?! :-)
[10:21] <alanc> is there a prize?
[10:23] <bubbva> no, especially considering it would be self reported :)
[10:47] * plocher voted #200 after reading everyone's candidate statements - this was a hard slate to winnow down, as there are many interesting and motivated candidates!
[10:52] <alanc> you should at least get the honor of updating /topic for being the 200th voter
[10:52] <bubbva> :)
[10:53] * plocher changes topic to 'Welcome to OpenSolaris 2010 Meeting (quorum reached) | election closes Mar 23 | 200 votes so far | http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Community+Group+ogb/2010 | IRC log: http://bit.ly/bbemAK | format "ogbot register <your OS.o ID> as <your full name>"'

[10:58] * JBeck approves of the shorter topic :-)
[10:59] * plocher also added a "vote now" link on the OGB/2010 page to make things even more obvious...
